The Stone Collection Dallas supplies granite for newly built 1970 tornado memorial in Lubbock, TX, honoring lives lost

May 28, 2021

In 2017, The City of Lubbock, TX  designated four acres of land at Avenue Q and Glenna Goodacre Boulevard, to build a tribute to the 26 lives that were lost when an F5 tornado struck the heart of Lubbock on May 11, 1970. Fast forward to 2021, and the new memorial is now complete.

Earlier this month, on the 51st anniversary of the tornado, a ceremony was held at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center to dedicate the new memorial.  A gateway to downtown Lubbock, the memorial was designed by MWM Architects and features 20-foot walls that represent the path of the tornadoes, telling the story of the victims and recovery.

The Stone Collection Dallas is proud to have supplied Absolute Black granite and Luna Pearl granite to help construct the 20-foot waves as well as the fountain. Fabrication on the project was completed by Collins Stone. Quotes from survivors adorn the Absolute Black granite, demonstrating the fortitude and resilience of the community.

“It’s about honoring those folks that lost family, about those folks that stood up and said ‘We’re not gonna let this beat us down.’ There’s a true West Texas spirit around here…”

—Stephen Faulk, VP of MWM Architects

The Tornado Memorial Gateway Committee’s goal for the Lubbock memorial is to provide hope and promise among tragedy. The committee is still accepting donations to help fund the ongoing upkeep and maintenance of the memorial. You can donate by clicking here and noting “Tornado Memorial” on the donation.
